THE JUNETEENTH EMANCIPATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Juneteenth of Fairfield County® organizationis pleased to offer uponselectionbytheScholarshipCommittee,one (1) $1000 scholarship each year to a graduating high school senior who is a dependent of a law enforcement officer or military personnel who work or live in Fairfield Countyentering collegeworking towards the completion of a higher education degree.

Application requirements and how to apply:

The application package consists of the two-page application, a high school transcript and a typed essay of 500 words or less, double spaced and no longer than two pages. The essay topic for 2015 is: Did the American Institution of Slavery forever change the destiny of people of African Heritage in America?

Where to apply:

Applications are available as a PDF file during the application timeframe from the Juneteenth website at www.juneteenthoffairfieldcounty.orgor from your school’s guidance counselor. Completed applications must be submitted to the office of Juneteenth of Fairfield County, Inc., 925 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT. Applications sent by email or fax will not be accepted.

Recipient Selection

The Scholarship Committee will select the recipient based on the following criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A submitted essay

When to apply

The scholarship program application process begins in May. Applications must be completed and returned by June 30th and the scholarship will be awarded in September upon receipt of a copy of your college transcript.

 

Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in the fall term in an accredited U.S. college or university, or junior/community college. They must have a minimum cumulative un-weighted high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).

 

To be eligibleyou must be a dependent of a law enforcement officer or military personnel who works or lives in Fairfield County(full-time active service, retired, or killed in the line of duty), must be a current high school senior at the time of application submission and must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher (based on a 4.0 system), and must be active in the community through volunteer work.

Applications must be postmarked by June 30th.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

• Applicant must be a current graduating high school senior 

• Applicant must be a citizen of the United States.

The Juneteenth Scholarship is not renewable.

Members of the Juneteenth Board of Directors, The Juneteenth of Fairfield County® organization, the Juneteenth Scholarship Selection Committee, and their spouses or families to the first degree of consanguinity are not eligible to apply for or receive a Juneteenth scholarship.
